Day 12

~ 2Corinthians 5:14-17
”Either way, Christ’s love controls us.  Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life.  He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves.  Instead they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.  So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view.  At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view.  How differently we know him now!  This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person.  The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”

If you have been around me for any length of time you have likely heard me say, “life is like a wheel and Jesus is the center of that wheel.  Everything in life revolves around Him, not the other way around.” Many people however consider that Jesus Christ is merely a spoke on the wheel.  When they feel like it they come to church, pray, or read His Word.  Jesus said,

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.  He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.  You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.  Remain in me, as I also remain in you.  No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine.  Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.  I am the vine; you are the branches.  If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.  If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.  If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” John 15:1-7 NIV.

I absolutely love this passage of scripture!  The King James Version of the Bible uses the word Abide, instead of remain, let me tell you why I love that word in this verse.  Abide means:  to accept, to comply, to obey, to follow, to acknowledge, to respect, to uphold, and to act in accordance with.  When I treat Jesus Christ in my life like He IS my life rather than treating Him like a spoke on the wheel of my life I am acting in accordance with His Word.  Now he can bless my life.  Now all the promises held in the Word apply to me!  God wants the very best for you and me but he can only give it when we first give all of ourselves to Him in obedience and intimate relationship with Jesus Christ our King.  I’m reminded of a song I learned in Sunday school as a child.  “O-B-E-D-I-E-N-C-E, obedience is the very best way to show that you believe.”

During this season of fasting let’s ask the Holy Spirit to teach us to remain in the vine which is Jesus Christ and His words to remain in us so that we can produce much fruit and be called true disciples!

FATHER, I want to bring great glory to your name by being a true disciple of Jesus Christ.  I acknowledge that apart from the vine that is Jesus I am nothing and my life is on a destructive path.  If I put you first in my life Jesus, God will prune me and cause me to grow and bear much fruit.  Holy Spirit I need power that only you give to withstand the temptations of this world that pull me away from the very reason I exist.  I cannot do life on my own, I surrender every part of my life to you Jesus my Lord, and King.  I love you Lord and commit my will to you today and for the rest of my life.
