~2Timothy 4:2-4NLT

“Preach the word of God.  Be prepared, whether the time is favourable or not.  Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching. For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching.  They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear.  They will reject the truth and chase after myths.”

Our culture tells us that if it feels good it is good.  If we think it’s truth, then it is.  There are many ways to God.  We only have one life so we should do what makes us happy.  Paul told Timothy, “a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching.”  We are living in that time.

The Holy Spirit foretold, through Paul a time where obedience to holiness and wholesomeness would be considered outdated.  A time where people would come to church only to hear motivational messages.  These are the people with “itching ears.”  Itching- ear syndrome is when people want to hear something new and exciting, something that tells them however they have chosen to live life if fine by God.  They want to be entertained by the worship team and for the preacher to deliver a word that makes them feel warm and fuzzy inside.  The great deception that Paul warned Timothy about is that in the last days a great many leaders would compromise the word of God, and restyle the message of Jesus Christ to satisfy sinful desires.  In this day and age there is an accommodating attitude toward the world that produces a brand of Christianity that melds into the environment around us.This group of teachers and preachers say that God understands the times we live in; they shy away from talking about sin or the need for repentance in order to not offend.  They reject the fixed truth of the Word of God and substitute it for myths and societal tolerance.  This mix of truth and falsehood will eventually lead even larger numbers of Christians into a distorted perception of who the Christ of Christianity really is. The Holy Spirit warned of this impeding deception so that we can be watchful of these kinds of preachers but also so that we will examine our own hearts and make sure that we have not developed a distaste for the truth of the Word, that we are not following our own sinful lusts and desires, and that our ears are not itching to hear only that which condones a lifestyle of sin. As Children of God we must not reject the truth of God’s word in our lives.  We must understand deep in our beings that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.  So do not be attracted by strange, new ideas” (Hebrews 13:8,9 NLT)

The good news however is that in the last days God will raise up another group of spiritual leaders.  Paul wrote about these leaders, calling them “….blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation among whom ye shine as light in the world.” (Philippians 2:15).   This is the group you want to be a part of in the last days!

My Prayer for Today:

Father, please help me to desire you and your ways more than anything this world has to offer.  Purify my heart before you, cleanse me Lord I pray, remove from me ever sin, every erroneous way of thinking, every lie that I have ever believed about you so that I can live the life you have called me to live.   Give me the gift of discernment so that I recognize lies and half-truths when I hear them.  Help me to allow the Holy Spirit full access to my life so that I won’t be led astray.

 In Jesus’ name I pray.
