Psalms 105: 1-5 (ESV)
Oh, give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name;
make known his deeds among the peoples!
Sing to him, sing praises to him;
tell of all his wondrous works!
Glory in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
Seek the Lord and his strength;
seek his presence continually!
Remember the wondrous works that he has done,
his miracles, and the judgments he uttered,
Do you feel overwhelmed, stressed, tired, or just plain “worn out”? Many have at one point in time. I know I have. I have taken on so many responsibilities that requires a lot of my time: from being in school, having to meet the needs and the demands of the family and the home, serving in ministry at my church, and working a job. Sometimes I feel as though there are just not enough hours in the day to get it all done. This leaves me feeling a bit overwhelmed, tired, stressed, and just plain worn out. By no means does God want us to live this way. He wants us to know that He is with us to help us get through those long to-do lists that seems like they will never end. He wants to help us get us through those tough situations where we may feel that we can’t make it, where we’re ready to throw in the towel. So, if you are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, tired, or just plain worn out, now is probably a good time to examine your priorities, so that you can get back on track and begin to live the victorious life God plans for you.
One way that we can overcome or cope with being overwhelmed, stressed, tired or just plain “worn out” is to rest. Matthew 11: 28-30 Jesus said, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light". It is important for us to take time for ourselves and rest. You may have to remove yourself from your daily routine or walk away from your long to-do lists and find a place where you can rest in Him, even if it’s just for five or ten minutes. Taking a break from the cares of this world that have you feeling overwhelmed, stressed, tired or just plain worn out is a must. It’s ok to leave the house untidy for a day to catch up on some sleep. It’s ok to cut long phone calls short or allow your cell phones to go to voicemail so that you can have some quiet time. We must give our mind, body, and soul time to refuel and recharge. God wants us to trust Him to take care of things for us.
Another way that we can overcome or cope with being overwhelmed, stressed, tired or just plain “worn out” is to spend time with God. We try to do everything in our own strength, leaving God out of what we do. Spiritually we find ourselves headed down a slippery slope of hopelessness, ready to give up on God. Now is not the time to lose sight of His plans that He has for our lives. We need to reflect on all of the good things God had done for us, so that we don’t forget about what He is capable of doing in our lives right now. The Psalmist tells us in Psalms 105:5 to “remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered.”
One more way that we can overcome or cope with being overwhelmed, stressed, tired or just plain “worn out” is praise. The Psalmist used praise as a coping mechanism. He sang praises to God and gave thanks for all the things he had been through. In Psalms 105: 2-3 it says Oh, give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works! Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice! In the midst of our circumstances, challenges, or struggles, we should give God praise because we know that He has promised to be with us and that He will help us.
So, in this new year, I challenge you to follow these three strategies: find time to rest, remember the good things God had done in your life, and praise and thank God for all that you’ve been through to get to where you are now. With me, I know that I, by no ways, am done with being faced with tough situations. However, it is important for me to remember that when things get busy and stressful in life, I can always go to God and ask for His help, knowing that He will be there for me.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
I know that I have been consumed with many things that have knocked me off track from resting and taking time to just reflect on and remember how good you have been to me. Please forgive me. Help me to have the strength to seek you daily, remembering the good things that you have done for me, and knowing that you will equip me with what I need to get through each day. I praise your name because you are Holy, your name is great and greatly to be praised! Thank you for being there for me when I needed you.
